Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou was a poet, author, and civil rights activist whose words continue to uplift generations. Born in 1928, she faced significant trauma and adversity growing up — yet she transformed her pain into art, advocacy, and empowerment.

Her book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings became a landmark in literature, especially for Black women finding their voice. She was not only a brilliant writer, but a teacher of strength, dignity, and grace.

Angelou was honored with over 50 honorary degrees and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama in 2011.
